Planning My First Fall Project
The 1st of September is always sad because it means (1) my birthday is over, and (2) the end of summer is near. I am so NOT ready for Fall. Not because I don't like Fall per se, but a short, beautiful Fall is then followed by endless months of cold and sadness.
To console myself for the imminent return of cold and sadness, I have my first Fall project picked out. Simplicity has a new line out called "Sew Simple." They are designed to be easy patterns for beginners with minimal details. What they're really doing is getting you used to only having one view per envelope! But kudos to them for updating the pattern envelope artwork. I admit I was sucked in by it and had to get Simplicity 1998.
I don't think I will wear it quite that short, but I am picturing it as a great piece for the colorblocking trend, with an obi, brightly colored tights, maybe a turtleneck underneath. I have several gorgeous wools in the turqouise/teal family from The Carol Collection. I chose a deep peacock; for the colors to go with it I'm thinking orange, chartruese, yellow, purple...the possibilities are endless!
What is your first project for (*shudder*) Fall?
==================
I got my birthday dress *almost* done under the wire for yesterday. The inside still needs a bit of hand-sewing, but the outside was good enough to wear. I can't wait to show it off! (Didn't have time to download and edit the photos yesterday.)

I can totally see you posing exactly like the drawing on the pattern envelope when you've made this. I thought it was a vintage pattern at first, it looks cute. I really want to make the military blazer/jacket from August's Burda but it is still way to hot to even contemplate it at the moment. I will probably start it about next April just as its warming up again!
Now that I have allergies all spring and summer, I look forward to autumn! It's a cute dress. It looks sort of 1960s to me. Making it up in a bright wool colour and then adding coloured tights sounds like a good plan. Suddenly colour is everywhere. Which is fine by me. I was never very good at sticking strictly to black.
I actually thought 1998 was the pattern date, not number based on the picture. Pretty funny. It's a cute dress and I think it will suit you.
We have birthdays rather close together, mine is tomorrow.
I agree about sewing for fall (*shudder*) SO prefer summer clothes! but that dress is cute - has a bit of 60's style.
and I am working on my birthday dress as well - a Labor Day-ish birthday.
(which always meant new school clothes as a kid)
Happy Birthday.
I started cutting out my new coat last night. I'm going to be modifying Vogue 8346, View A, to add contrast cuffs and in-seam welt pockets. I have a glorious big-plaid woolen designated for it, in medium brown with darker brown and cream plaid. The lining is a cream colored suiting-weight wool. It should be precisely what I need in a coat. Brown, warm, girly.

I am sewing for a girlfriend this month. We are making a pretty pullover dress in teal crepe couture (poly blend and a nice fabric I picked up in Portland OR at a PR weekend). The pattern is a vintage 70s dress with a v neckband, gathers along the band and at the waist, and with gathered sleeves with push up. I think we'll redo those sleeves!!
Cute dress-it will be perfect for you and your fabric choice sounds terrific.
Girl you need to move to Texas. We have ten seconds of winter and a good 6 months of summer. You'd be the happiest girl in Texas. ha ha

Happy birthday! I've been thinking about a corduroy tunic to layer over long-sleeve tops. This pattern would be great for something like that! (And lovely with Obi and lots of colors, of course!)
We've had Fall weather for going on two months now, and will do for another 2-3 so I *love* sewing Fall stuff (seriously, I'm not joking - it's been mid-50s. In AUGUST!).
I'm in the midst of making an incredibly cute Burda petite trench jacket from the Feb 2009 issue. I was skeptical making the muslin, but I tried it on and it was LOVE.
I can tell already that this Simplicity pattern is going to look great on you, it's just your style and I can already imagine you wearing it with bright tights!
Hello,
Recently found your blog and have been admiring your projects from afar. Can't wait to see how this project turns out as I have earmarked this very same pattern for possible purchase. Good luck on it.

Yay for birthday dresses! In the years that my birthday is not the herald of Spring I always hope it will be, I must settle for birthday fabric, which I guess is still birthday happy...
I agree about fall too. Fall is so so short here. Winter can be a mixed bag though--not necessarily freezing.
I have a wrap dress all cut out and ready to go. I *sigh* have several home dec projects I'm trying to finish. Such boring sewing home dec...but it does make for a pretty house.
The first fall project I'm actually excited for is Butterick 5677 (whenever Buttericks go on sale) in a really pretty turquoise and white combo.
I'll have to admit that I got suckered into those patterns too, because of the look of them.
Happy Birthday!!!
I haven't looked at those yet, I also thought it was a vintage pattern; it looks so sixties! It would look great on you. Here downunder I'm looking forward to some summer sewing after a very cold winter.

This dress is totally you, and (of course) I love the peacock blue you chose!
I hope you had a great birthday.
I have a truckload of projects for fall, but first need to get rid of sciatica before I am allowed to get sewing again! :)
I can't wait to see your birthday dress and I love the pattern you have picked out for your first fall project. CUTE!
Like you, I am so not ready for the end of summer. But I do love the project you have picked out - something fun and relatively simple like this great looking dress will give your autumn wardrobe a real kick start.
Happy birthday! Cute project.
That is funny because I have this dress cut out on my floor right now! Only I think I am going to shorten it to be a shirt worn with jeans and tall boots.
I like the looks of the SewSimple envelopes, too. At first I thought they were "Built By Wendy" because the graphic on those patterns were similar.
Ooo. This pattern totally suits you and this will be perfect for a color blocking experiment.
I had to laugh at your autumnal shudders. I just wrote something very similar in my first Fall project post - a crochet scarf. The older I get the more I love warm weather - humid or not - and dread winter.
The colourblocking sounds perfect for that pattern. Very retro-looking envelope!
Can't wait to see your birthday suit!
That dress is so cute. And how retro!
For fall, I have several shirts to alter for my daughter and a baptism outfit for a new nephew and a bunch of Christmas presents. Something for myself?! scoff. cough cough.
Living in hot Texas (we finally got down into the 90's for highs) I'm excited about Fall. Down here it's all about sewing fall colored fabrics that are the same weight as summer fabrics. Anyway, it's something different and all the magazines seem to burst with new fashions which get my blood pumping! I do understand your reluctance to cooler months as I lived in Maryland for a couple of years and grew up in St Louis. Keep sewing up the brights!
I always have mixed feelings about the end of summer - Autumn is my favorite weather season and October is my favorite month all year, but I love the slower pace and vacations of summer. I can't think past the dress I'm sewing to wear to a friend's wedding, but I'll be happy for some cool weather sewing after that!
