I made this blouse, McCall 5426, in the Summer of 2008 of souvenir fabric from Vietnam. I never wore it much, though, because I couldn't figure out what to match it with. It doesn't look great with gray, and I just cannot bring myself to wear orange and black together (it's just too Halloween--and I love Halloween!). Also, it gapes between the buttons. I finally sewed on snaps between them, but I think I have figured out the reason it gapes is that the self-facing for the placket is not sewn down on the inside, so it pulls open. I need to hand-stitch the placket facings to the underlining and I think it will solve the problem completely.
Last Fall I was walking down the street and saw a girl in a navy dress and orange shoes and she was an epiphany: orange and navy! They look great together.
So come Spring, I matched the blouse with 04-2008-108, which I made in the Spring of 2008 for my trip to Paris (I wore the skirt to visit Notre Dame and eat Berthillon ice cream). Obviously this photo is a few months old because I was still in tights.
The outfit doesn't entirely work, due to the belt and the shoes. I think they need to match. I wish I could find some comfortable gray shoes! But the orange and navy are spot on, I think, and with the addition of the navy I think the gray works too.
What are your epiphany color combos? I am planning a yellow and white blouse and not having a lot of success coming up with skirt ideas other than gray (although thinking about it, navy might work with that combo too).

Great outfit! I can't think of an epiphany as yet but it is an intriguing question and I look forward to others' replies. Mimi
I love orange and navy. I found an orange and navy stripe at the fabric store the other day. And I like yellow and purple together, though yellow and navy would look great, too.
Love the orange and navy together! So fresh. Local high school here wears black and orange, so I often sport that combo. My all-time favorite? Hot pink with orange. (Very 19th-century German quilt combination, with the addition of lime green!) That's not a combination one finds in RTW, since about 1987, so if I want to sport it, I have to sew it up myself. Fabric store clerks look at me sideways, but I don't care.
I agree that orange and navy look great together. I have to be careful though, my clothes are pretty casual usually and putting the two together can look like an easter seaboard sports team if I am not careful!
The Denver Broncos figured out that color combo, too! Seriously, look at Jeanne Allen's color books. I blogged about them here.

Orange and hot pink for sure. Either of those also livens up navy but i prefer a brighter blue like cobalt or lapis. But my favorite combo in the eye-popping department is coral (an orange-y coral) with turquoise.
Sorry - this is unrelated to this post, so feel free to take down. I'm intrigued by the salty oatmeal cookie. Let me know if you are successful! The original article on resting the dough is here: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/09/dining/09chip.html
I love orange and navy -- orange and yellow can be nice too, in the right proportions. Or orange and olive. I agree that orange and pink is another winner. I think yellow with burgundy can be nice, and it's an unexpected combo. You wouldn't know it from my boring-as-heck wardrobe, but I love playing with color combos.
Yellow and white and navy are amazing together. I never would have thought of orange and navy together (I don't wear orange much), but that combination looks great too!
Hey I live in Syracuse and just wanted to say that although I love your blog, I am so sick of orange and navy blue together. The local university has a sports complex domination which forces an ubiquitous theme of orange and blue across the entire town. And I really think orange and gray can work together. I also think yellow & white top with slim black pants would look smashing on you, maybe even matching headband, gold accessories.
Anyway, my two cents given, Sarah
I love orange and navy. My special color combo is robin's egg blue and bright red. Love it!
I love the orange and navy combo. It's great that your beautiful blouse has met with it's perfect skirt partner!
Loving the orange and navy together. I have some navy cool wool fabric and it is giivng me ideas on how to weat it.
My latest fav colour combo is brown and red.
Complementary colors (opposites on the color wheel) work well together as a general rule so, yes, orange and navy are wonderful. One of my favorites is olive green and red as a winter combo, a little unusual but not odd.
Last week I put orange (on the earthy side) with bronzy green. It was unexpected and looked good together.
Orange and navy take me right back to high school - they were our school colours. At the time I didn't like the combo at all but now I love orange and think it looks great.
Epiphany colour combos? Lavender and coral; turquoise and coral; orchid and chocolate brown. And I love lavender and yellow together.
As a graduate of the University of Virginia and the mother of an incoming first year, I LOVE orange and navy together. Looks great!
How about yellow and green? It's the national sporting colours here (Australia), so I wouldn't personally wear it, but it can look pretty good...
great color combo!
Ihave kind of fallen in love with magenta and turquoise, it sounds crazy loud but somehow it works. Now I am off to make something orange to wear with navy!
Great combination and yet another lovely outfit!
I wouldn't have thought orange and navy, either, but they really do work! And I love the blouse with orange polka dots.
Lately, I've been looking for colors that work with some dark olive cargo pants I made (besides the obvious but boring white). Someone mentioned I looked like a park ranger when I wore natural linen, hehe. But I think red and pink can work.
I like the orange and navy! It works so well I think because the orange is so subtle in the top. That is really cool eyelet on the skirt too.
As for me, I'm an inveterate aqua lover. It's in my house, I wear it. And I love it with most colors--like this dress with the magenta ties:

I like the orange and navy and also like orange and brown combos. I've also seen the orange/gray combo work but it depends on the gray.
As a lover of orange, I have also come to the orange and navy solution after looking like a Halloween commercial for many years. I sounds like you made the decision a lot quicker than I did.
I really like yellow with the right shade of khaki - it takes the dullness off of the khaki, and doesn't compete. :)
You look totally adorable.
That looks great! I wouldn't have thought of that combo either. My daughter made a blue and orange bedspread once and I thought she was crazy picking those two colors, but it turned out great. She taught me that blue and orange are on opposite sides of the color wheel so they naturally compliment each other... hmmm...
Orange and navy look great - my personal epiphanies: pale pink and red, royal blue and black, pink and brown, persimmon and dark gold.
Also I love turquose, so I try it with everything to see if I can wear it more often.
