I'm heading to Germany for work! I'm pretty excited, as I've never been there. I get to visit the land of BWOF. I feel that can only be a good thing.
I'll be there from either the Saturday the 25th or Sunday the 26th of October and hope to stay through Sunday, 1 November. I'll be outside Frankfurt for a conference Monday through Wednesday, but hopefully will have Thursday, Friday, and Saturday to sightsee and then fly back Sunday. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions?
I'd love to see Berlin, but I'm not sure it will be worth it with my short time. I don't think I'll be able to fly out of Berlin, so I'd have to go back to Frankfurt Saturday night to catch my flight, so I'd spend more time traveling than sightseeing I think.

I'm jealous, too! I loved living in Germany. Of course Kaufhof was one of my favourite places to shop. I still have a piece of purple velvet that I bought there over 20 years ago. Ah, the memories. I know you're going to purchase some fabulous fabric there. Can't wait to see it!

ReplyDeleteWell, Frankfurt is NOT one of the prettiest city so Germany want show off for you ..
Berlin - that might be exhausting and if you want to visit you should book your flight as soon as possible. A lot of business people use to fly this route all the time.
If you like sitting in trains you might consider a travel up the Rhine to see all the castles and ruins along there. But with the windy autumn weather the roadways tend to be blocked and that is not a great experience.
So what else would be nice for you? Give me a hint and I might find something for you :-)
Btw: The land of Burda - I am more of knitter than a sewer, so I might be wrong, but I don't think you are going to be overwhelmed by seeing the offers available ... :-)

Hi! If you can make it to Metzingen (near Stuttgart) there is a fabric outlet selling fabrics from Hugo Boss ;-)
ReplyDeleteoh, and you can go to cologne and see the dome. If you go there by train you will also see the Mittelrheintal which is part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage.

ReplyDeleteBerlin is fascinating but if you don't have much time you might want to save it for another trip. There's just so much history there! And if you can find a fabric shop, I'll be upset. No one could tell us where to find one and after walking until my feet were swollen the only thing we found was a 'chain' store with very overpriced fabric. Some stuff was gorgeous but as I didn't plan on making a $99.00/yard evening dress I came home empty handed and disappointed. Perhaps Pattern Review could have helped me but I didn't know about it then.
ReplyDeleteGosh, you're lucky to have a job where you get to jet-set off like this! I agree that Berlin would be too much as a side trip. Maybe Munich (the capital of Bavaria) or Cologne?

I would suggest a river tour on the Rhine River. Did one in June and it was fantastic.

ReplyDeleteIf you are by any chance in downtown Frankfurt:Off from the "Zeil" (the main downtown road, pedestrian area), left of a departmentstore called "Karstadt" is the Bronnerstrasse". Just 200m into this street on the left is a nice fabric store, they sell designer fabrics left overs there.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I like Berlin, I would rather stay down south instead of travelling through the whole of the republic. Mainz and Wiesbaden are two nice cities near Frankfurt, you can go there by public transportation. There´s Heidelberg (now, that is typical tourist programme, but worth it) about an hour from Frankfurt. To Cologne its a 2 hours train ride. And even Strasbourg (France) is not that far!
Have fun! Hope for sunshine but prepare for cold and rain.
I just got the official from my mom- she was in Frankfurt at age 12 (!). She said go to the old city section of Frankfurt and see the town hall, it's supposed to be nice. Also, she thinks the Goethe museum is there (Hummels).
